Objective
The best teachers are the people who have
been through the mills themselves that’s why Indian Institute
of Packaging “Train the trainers program” for Asian countries,
a course aimed at producing competent regional packaging
trainers was about more than just talk. The course was
conceived during the APF board meeting at Colombo & took the
final shape at Japan. IIP with its vast infrastructure, hostel
facilities & trained staff was selected to undertake the
program.

Contents
A residential training programme was
designed for duration of four weeks. The course comprised of
Classroom Lectures, Country Paper Presentation, Discussions &
Project Work. Industrial / Field Visits suitably complemented
the course structure. IIP laboratory training aids, Library &
reference materials, Film show and above all the interaction
with the staff & instructors from the industry made the course
extremely useful.
Conduct
Most of the theoretical training took place
at IIP Campus. Internal as well as visiting faculties & the
specialists from the packaging industry shared their
knowledge. Topics ranging from introduction and concepts on
packaging and its potential; material based packaging;
properties, types, applications & developments, recent trends,
manufacture and design, CFB, plastics and high barrier films,
tinplate, glass and composite containers, paper and specialty
paper, paperboard, fibre foils etc were aptly covered by
experienced faculty. Product based packaging included lectures
& industrial visits on packaging of fresh food, processed
foods, packaging of pharmaceuticals, light & heavy engineering
goods. Printing techniques, printing inks, coding & marking,
recycling & eco aspects, evaluation of packs, package
designing, product – package compatibility / shelf life,
aseptic packaging, CAP/MAP, shrink packaging / stretch
wrapping, unit load devices, brand protection & promotion were
other areas which were discussed at length.
The lectures were very well complimented
with the industrial visits to Balmer Lawri Van-Leer Ltd.,
Parksons Packaging, Times Packaging, Vitrum Glass, Fibre Foils
Ltd., Positive Packaging India Pvt. Ltd., Mahananda Dairy,
Mother Dairy Foods Processing Ltd., Board of radiation and
Isotope Technology, Essel Propack,, Cadbury India Ltd., DIC
India Ltd.
